Sue Rutherford
Sue Rutherford is a ceramic artist whose work is deeply inspired by the textures, forms and patterns found within the New Zealand landscape, especially eroded rock and the dynamic forces of nature. Her pieces, created in her Lake Hāwea studio, are held in collections both across the country and overseas.
Her artistic practice centres on exploring surface detail and organic form, using a combination of wheel throwing, hand building and coiling techniques. Each vessel is treated as a canvas, built up with layers of slips, oxides and glazes, all applied and fired multiple times to achieve distinctive depth and complexity in texture. Her restrained colour palette and gestural marks evoke both the serenity and drama of Central Otago’s landscape and the wild, rugged coastlines of Aotearoa New Zealand.
This ongoing conversation between the natural environment and the creative process has earned Sue recognition and awards, including honours at the Cleveland Ceramic Exhibition and the Ceramics NZ National Exhibition, alongside national guest exhibitions.
